Joule apartments take shape on Capitol Hill

By JOURNAL STAFF

Essex Broadway LLC is building Joule, a 295-unit apartment complex on the former QFC site at Broadway East and Republican Street on Capitol Hill.

The owners are a joint venture of the Burkheimer family and Essex Property Trust, a Palo Alto, Calif.-based real estate investment trust, according to Bob Burkheimer.

The complex is slated for completion in the summer of 2010. Exxel Pacific is the contractor.

Joule will include 29,000 square feet of retail space and 370 underground parking stalls.

The units will be studios and one- and two-bedrooms, with some town homes and live-work lofts.

The retail will include restaurants and shops that are intended to help make the area more vibrant. The Brix Condominiums are under construction across the street.

The Burkheimer family has owned the QFC portion of the site for more than 60 years.

Founded in 1971, Essex Property Trust specializes in multifamily communities on the West Coast, specifically San Francisco, Southern California, Seattle and Portland, according to its Web site.
